Issue 4: Post-colonial architecture in Malaysia

The strategic sea lane that makes Malaysia become a global trade center and eventually this causes the intrusion of European to start out their trading business while spreading Christianity. Dating back to 15th century, the Portuguese act as the first European colonial power to concur the land of Peninsular Malaysia (Al Jazeera, 2013). The intrusion not only reserved a great portion of Malaya colonial history but also the architecture when European constructed their building.

The colonial buildings that built when post-colonial period in Malaysia are differentiated through country that ruled Malaya. The earliest European, Portugal had reserved the Christ Church, St Paul’s Church and many more signature buildings.

The Portuguese had concurred Malaya for two centuries. In the late 18th century, British East India Company had founded Georgetown as their trading center in Malaya, while dividing region with the Portuguese (Al Jazeera, 2013). The architecture in the era is significantly different. Renowned colonial building in Penang such as St George’s church and Penang City Hall reflects the architecture style during the era.
